ABOUT
Midlife didn't go the way I planned.
That turned out to be the best thing
that ever happened to me.
It started with a layoff.
During the pandemic, after nearly twenty years as a fashion buyer, I lost my job. And with it — the identity I'd built my whole adult life around.
I didn't spiral. But I did have to get very honest with myself about what came next.
I started writing. About the pivot. About the fear. About what it actually takes to rebuild yourself when the rug gets pulled out from under you at an age when you thought you'd have it figured out by now.
That writing turned into a podcast — because when I went looking for something that would help a woman like me find the courage and confidence to start over, I couldn't find it. Everything out there was about manifesting love or money. Nothing was for the woman trying to get grounded enough to make her next move.
So I made it myself.
The podcast grew into something I didn't expect either. Because life kept happening. My kids were becoming adults and I was quietly asking: okay, what's next for me? My parents needed me in ways I hadn't anticipated — and suddenly I was part of a generation holding everything at once. Then AI arrived and, I won't lie, it scared me. A career I'd just fought to build felt like it could shift overnight.
But here's what I've learned from living through disruption after disruption: midlife isn't the problem. It's the training ground.
Every unexpected turn — the layoff, the caregiving, the identity questions, the technology fears — brought me back to the same practice. Mindfulness. Affirmations. The quiet, daily work of staying grounded when everything around you is moving.
That's what Oh, Hello Midlife is. A place built from everything I've lived through. Articles, a newsletter, a podcast — and real conversations about the season of life nobody fully prepared us for.
Midlife isn't the problem.
It's the training ground.
Hi, I'm Valerie.
Twenty years in fashion buying. A layoff that changed everything. Two kids becoming adults, parents who need more of me every year, and a whole new chapter in AI and strategy I never saw coming.
This is where I write about it. Where I talk about it out loud. Welcome — I'm so glad you're here.
Valerie
THE MINDFUL MIDLIFE MOM PODCAST
Affirmations aren't just words you say to yourself and hope for the best. They're a practice.
And that practice creates something you desperately need in midlife — space. Space to stop overthinking. Space to stay grounded when everything around you is shifting. Space to remember that you have survived every disruption that came before this one.
That's what this podcast is. Real conversations, honest tools, and the practices that actually help — for the middle of everything.
START LISTENING 🎧A FEW THINGS ABOUT ME
I split my time between Southern California and Northern California taking care of my aging parents. I fly back and forth more than most people drive to work.
My go-to pick-me-up: iced matcha latte with oat milk. Every time.
I went to fashion school to be a designer. I never actually designed a thing professionally. (Life had other plans.)
I used to despise running. Now a 20-minute run is my reset button. Never thought I'd say that.
My husband got me into EDM and now my go-to artists are: Fred Again, Barry Can't Swim, It's Murph… who knows which DJ could be next?
Reality competition TV is my love language. Top Chef. Survivor. The Amazing Race. Great British Baking Show—love them all!
